CLOUD COMPUTING

Cloud computing is nothing more than a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet with a purpose to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer.  It can be used for personal or business use and can be any size of memory that you need.  Cloud computing is the best and most efficient way for anyone or any business to store their documents and files.  It gives the ability to safely access and share documents.  It can be accessed from anywhere and is more cost conscious than conventional storage like thumb drives and similar equipment.  If you have access to Wi-Fi, then you have access to the cloud – and your files.  For home or school needs, it can be used to inexpensively (sometimes you can get this service free/included with different subscriptions) to store your files and data, pictures, anything that you would want to hold on to in case a backup is needed.
According to Microsoft, cloud computing is “the delivery of computing services—including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and intelligence—over the Internet (“the cloud”) to offer faster innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale.” (Microsoft, n.d.)  There are also three different types of cloud reporting:  Public cloud, Private cloud, and Hybrid cloud.
  • Public clouds are owned and operated by a third-party, such as OneDrive.   The ability to access your files go through their website or app.
  • ·A Private cloud is just that – something that would set up on a company or private server so that you can only access these while engaged with that datacenter.  These Private clouds can also be purchased from any third-party provider but maintained on a private network.
  •  A Hybrid cloud is a combination of both options but conjoined together by technology that allows data and applications to be shared between them.  This allows better flexibility with more distribution options and helps improve the existing infrastructure, security, and compliance.
These three types of cloud computing services fall into four categories: infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), serverless, and software as a service (SaaS).
  • Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) is the most basic of cloud services.  This is a pay-as-you-go cloud that uses a “rented” IT infrastructure, which are servers and virtual machines (VMs), storage, networks, and operating systems.
  • Platform as a service (PaaS) is cloud computing that has the added environment for developing, testing, delivering, and managing software applications.  This allows developers to easily and quickly create web or mobile apps without having to set up or manage the infrastructure of servers, storage, network, and databases that they require.
  • Serverless computing is used for building app functionality where the service is constantly managing the servers and infrastructure, allowing the programmer to focus on the project.  The cloud provider is responsible for handling the setup, capacity planning, and server management that triggers a specific function when needed.
  •  Software as a service (SaaS) is software that is used for delivering software applications over the internet or on demand that is usually on a subscription basis.  The service is ultimately responsible for hosting and managing the software application and underlying infrastructure while handling maintenance such as upgrades and security patching.
You may use cloud computing right now in your home.  If you have a streaming device like Netflix or Disney+, Apple TV, etc., then you are using cloud computing.  These services use cloud computing because the servers are expandable to fit the needs of storage and users as they log in.  It is also an advantageous move for the streaming companies to use these services because when they hire the cloud, they also hire the techs that monitor and maintain the servers.  An example of one of these companies that owns these larger servers is AWS (Amazon Web Services) which is an extension of Amazon.  They offer many different web cloud services that will fit with almost any company need.
