Week 5 - 8 Tips for Speeding up Windows 10

  1. Power Options This function changes how your computer uses power more effectively for optimum performance.
    • Click on your "Start Menu" which is the Windows icon in the bottom right corner.
    • Search by typing "power option" in the window and select it from window.
    • Change to "High Performance"

2. Disable Start-up Programs - This will change what programs automatically run when you turn on your computer. It it's not a program that you would normally use, you can disable it.

    •  Go to your DOS Manager by right-clicking on the dark space at the bottom of the windows screen.
    • Select "Task Manager"
    • Select the "Startup" tab.
    • Go through your list of start up programs.  If any are not used often, you can possibly disable them by selecting it.  If the "disable" button on the bottom right becomes active, select it and it will disable the start up feature.
    • The "Status" will change to "Disabled" and no longer run at startup.  
3.  Defragment and Optimize Drives - This tool will combine "like" programs in order to make the drive run faster.

    • Click on the "Start" button and search "Defragment"
    • Click on the "Defragment and Optimize Drives" link.
    • Select the drive that operates your Windows Operating System (Usually C:)
    • Select the "Optimize" button and close the window when it is finished.


4. Delete Temporary Files

    • Right-click on the "Windows" icon.
    • Select "Run"
    • Type "%temp%" and click "Ok"
    • Select all of these files and click "Delete"
    • Follow the same as above, replacing the word "temp" to access the folder to run.
    • Repeat again, replacing the word "prefetch" to access the folder to run.
 5. Cleanup Memory
    • Select the "File Explorer" icon.
    • Right-click on "C:" drive (or wherever you keep your operating system).
    • Select "Properties"
    • Select the "Disk Cleanup" button.
    • When finished, click "Ok"
    • Lastly, click "Yes" to the question if you want to permanently delete these files.

 6. Run MSConfig - This will reconfigure the Microsoft startup process.
    • Right-click on the "Windows" icon and select "Run"
    • Type "msconfig" and click "Ok"
    • Select the "Services" tab at the top
    • Click inside the box "Hide all Microsoft Services" to place a check mark inside the box.
    • Click "Ok"




7. Registry Tweaks - This will change the amount of time the mouse/desktop menu reaction  times.
    • Right-click on the "Windows" icon and select "Run"
    • Type "regedit" in the box and select "Ok"
    • Double-click the "Control Panel"
    • Select the line marked "Mouse"
    • Double-click the "MouseHoverTime" option
    • Change the variable to 10.

    • Select the "Desktop" line
    • Double-click on the "MenuShowDelay" line
    • change the variable to 10.
    • Restart your computer when finished.

 8. Visual Effects - this will change the way that the operating system uses graphics
*** NOTE: this will not effect gaming or program graphics!!
    •  Click on the "Windows" icon and type "system settings"
    •  Select "View Advanced System Settings" at the top.
    •  Click the "Settings" button under the top group called, "Performance"
    •  Click the radio button marked" Adjust for Best Performance" or you can customize these by selecting the option(s) that you want to keep.
