Week 3 - Computer Memory

Image source:  https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2c/Samsung-1GB-DDR2-Laptop-RAM.jpg/1280px-Samsung-1GB-DDR2-Laptop-RAM.jpg There are primarily 3 types of memory: RAM (Random Access Memory) - primary memory where data is stored ROM (Read Only Memory) - primary memory where data is permanently stored Flash memory - secondary memory that is used to store data to be used later or on the go RAM is very volatile and will not be stored when the power is turned off.  It allows more than one program to be running all at once in order for the motherboard to activate what it needs to do.  It takes the stress off of the CPU and allows the user to switch to different programs smoothly, allowing the computer to do more things at once.  There are Many types like DDR, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, DDR3L, SODDIM, as a few more. The Frequency can range from 1000 to over 3600 mhz. ROM is the permanent memory where the CPU gets the program to run.  This c...

Week 2 - Major Internal Components of a Computer

Image Source: miketech.weebly.com What is inside your Computer Cabinet?? Motherboard:   Your motherboard is the most important part of your computer.  This is because it is the piece that ALL of the components connect to.  Without it, it would be just a box full of spare parts.  Its a circuit board that allows the components to talk or communicate with each other.  The motherboard has specific "ports" or plugs on the inside and outside that allow for different pieces to be connected.  Outside connections include an Ethernet port, mouse, speaker, or mic port, the power cord, and USB ports, for example.  The inside ports are explained with each piece of equipment below.   Also attached to the motherboard are expansion slots to add video cards and RAM slots used to attach the memory sticks.  (Image Source: https://www.houkconsulting.com/2017/03/standard-computer-components/) Power Supply:  This device is what su...

Week 1 - Introduction

Welcome Bloggers!!  My name is Marc and I will be adding information about what I am learning each week about Computer and Software Management.  I have a little bit of knowledge of components from what my father had taught me over the years.  He used to be a computer administrator/manager for a telephone company back in Ohio, where I grew up.  I was always helping him when he went into work (all hours of the night) to fix issues that were happening within his systems.  Each system would fill up a room and have many large pieces of hardware that would now fit within a desktop or laptop computer.  Components have come a long way.  I am really excited to learn more about this topic and sharing it all with you each week. Please post any comments or questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability.
